Professor Gary J. A. Oak, widely regarded as one of the greatest trainers of his generation, had taken over the lab after his grandfather's retirement. A new generation had arisen, and science had turned up dozens - even hundreds - of new species of Pokemon from both within Kanto's borders and from exotic regions far beyond. Where he had once captured the native Kanto Pokemon, trained them and battled them against the best of the Indigo League, now he was cataloging and examining Pokedex data from those new species unknown in his grandfather's day. The work was not quite so glamorous as Pokemon training, but it was certainly interesting nonetheless - and besides, battling was a young man's game.
Much like those young people gathering at his lab today. Not all of them were receiving their first Pokemon there, of course, but all of them were receiving brand-new Pokedexes. These newer models had far more bells and whistles than what he’d used back when he was a kid. Gary sat at his desk late through the night putting the finishing touches on the Pokedexes he was issuing out to a new generation, so engrossed in his labors that he barely noticed the kids entering.

Marshall is the first to clear the door, and he looks about the lab with a certain irreverence. He strides across the room once he locks eyes on the professor, but waits to speak until the others make it inside.

Terry enters next, colliding with the door and falling over, Val's chirp of protest coming from under his bandanna. He stands up and runs forwards without looking, coming to a halt next to Marshall. He bounces in spot, clearly wanting to talk but willing to follow the older boy's lead.

Next up, Church is in. He's barely able to contain his excitement. Today was the day all his studies would give fruits. Today was the day he'd get an official Pokédex and a starting Pokémon of his very own. Finally, he'd be able to start his journey to become the greatest trainer of his region!
He stands in line next to the other boys, not able to break the silence and anticipation. The very sight of Professor Oak fills him with awe.

In..........."Amber stood almost shaking at the door to the lab. Realizing she was becoming lightheaded, she released a breath she forgot she was holding. Her left hand fiddled with Chime's pokeball, wishing desperately she had enough courage to bring him out. She had debated for quite a while and decided that it probably wasn't the right form to have her pokemon out in case anyone else didn't have a starter. She looked to her watch. The deadline would soon be approaching. She wouldn't want to be late with her meeting of... of... Gary. FREAKING. Oak. I'm gonna meet the former trainer turned Pokemon Goddamn Professor Gary Oak!With a shaking hand, she pushed the lab door with slightly more force than intended. Amber winced at the noise and speed walked to where the other recipients were. Standing next to the three boys, she finally turned her head towards him. She spied the most majestic back she's ever seen. Professor Gary J. A. Oak looked even more intimidating in person than in pictures.

The good professor smiled at the pitter-patter of tiny feet rushing into his lab, then rose to greet the new trainers. Most already had their Pokemon, he knew, with only the boy named Churchill here to actually receive a starting Pokemon.
Gary knew all of their names, of course. That was something of a pet peeve of his; a professor ought to know more about the kids he was entrusting with expensive hardware and priceless Pokemon than just the fact that they existed. A professor ought to have standards. Not that he was bitter or anything.
Professor Oak smiled as he greeted the four young trainers. "Welcome! You must be the new Trainers here to receive your Pokedexes." He laid a hand on his chest and closed his eyes in smug self-assurance a moment as he introduced himself. "I am, of course, Professor Oak," He pulled a Pokeball from his belt and released a Blastoise with a flash of energy. "I study Pokemon much like this one - particularly, I'm documenting the newfound species immigrating into Kanto from other regions. With the help of trainers like you, I study their genetic drift both to account for their origins - whether they came here through natural immigration or through careless trainers releasing them into the wilds - and how they change to adapt to Kanto."
The professor picked up one of the red-cased Pokedexes from the table. "They help me with these devices - do you know what they are?"

Marshall looked at the other kids assembled with a sudden sense of trepidation. They were all looking at this man like he was somebody important, and he barely knew the guy's name, much less whatever he was talking about. With sudden bravado, he belts out "Maybe you could catch everybody up that doesn't know."
The tall, dark-skinned boy runs his hand across his nearly shaved head before returning to his standard composed structure.

"Gladly, Marshall." Gary smiled as he pressed a button on the Pokedex, opening it up and holding it up to his Blastoise. The Pokemon watched with interest as a flickering laser light, barely visible to the naked eye, flitted across the Pokemon from an emitter on the top of the device. An image of the Blastoise appeared on the Pokedex's screen, along with an encyclopedia entry on the species, its habits, and physiological data. ”This is a Pokedex. It scans and records biometric data on any Pokemon you might encounter. Whenever you go to a Pokemon Center, just use the wi-fi there to upload your collected data to my computer; the more Pokemon you scan the better data I have to work with. It has other functions, of course, but I'm sure you'll discover those on your own.” He pressed the button again, and the Pokedex collapsed back in on itself. Gary handed the Pokedex to the young man. ”Give it a try.”

Marshall takes the device and points it at Blastoise once more, but stops. He takes a pokeball from his side and releases the stored pokemon inside to reveal a squat rocky beast that seems about fifty percent head. The creature makes a sound you might interpret as a roar if he were older, but currently seems more akin to a squeak. He whips his tail back and forth as he looks about the room curiously. He's wearing a pair of goggles that seem to oscillate between making him look more intimidating and adorable simultaneously, and he has something on his head that looks vaguely like a crown. Is that... eggshell?
"This is The King. Let's see what this 'dex thing says about him." Marshall points the Pokedex at The King and scans him.

"Oh wow, you have a Tyrunt? How'd you get it?" Terry says, excitedly reaching out for the pokemon. "It's the Royal Heir pokemon, usually revived from the fossilised jaw of a Tyrantrum, it's evolution. Over a hundred million years ago, this little guy threw tantrums about not yet being the king of monsters. Now he probably throws tantrums about not getting fed on time. Tyrunt's are notoriously early risers and bite everything. Kinda like a rocky Totodile. So what ability does he have? Run Up or Hyper Cutter?"

Marshall is surprised by the sudden enthusiasm, and misses about half of what Terry says. "Uh, wow. You know a whole lot about The King. Uh, I got him on Mt. Silver on my way over to Kanto." Marshall gets over his initial alarm and slides into a shit-eating grin as he says, "I fought off one of those big birds who was trying to carry off his egg. I had to leap on its back as it was flying and choke it. The bird(as he's describing it, you guess he's talking about a Fearow) took us up about ten meters in the air before I choked it out. I managed to catch The King before he cracked, and we've been together since."
"Ability? I don't know about all that. He bites stuff really hard. That's about all I know. The King and I don't exactly do a lot of planning, you know? We're more about action!" The King actuates his trainers words his sqe-oar of approval.

Use your Pokedex to find out," Professor Oak suggested as he crouched down to examine the small saurian Pokemon more closely. "Input your Trainer ID on the profile section, and it should enable you to examine in-depth any Pokemon you've caught. Look in the menu under 'Own Pokemon.'"

Marshall tries to follow the Professor's instructions, fumbling on the device. At one point he nearly asks for help, running his hand over his scalp in frustration, but he spots the function the Professor is speaking about and clicks it triumphantly. The familiar image of Tyrunt appears on the screen, with the words Run Up and Hyper Cutter among many. In this case, Hyper Cutter has a red box around it, and Run Away is grayed out. The remaining words down the list in that section have only ? in the spot where words would be. " Huh. This thing is pretty cool." Showing the Professor and then the other kids the 'dex, Marshall says " I suppose stuff like this(referring to the ?) is what we're supposed to be helping with?"

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag43/Nido_Nido_Nido/Amber%20profile_zpsi5h6z4n6.png Amber felt a twinge of jealousy when Professor Oak called Marshall by his name. "He must be a real hotshot if Gary Oak knows his name." she thought. Amber gazed down at the pokedex in her left hand. Though she felt a little inadequate to be holding such a device, she couldn't help but smile. She noticed two of the other boys excitedly talking about their pokemon, but she was a bit too preoccupied to join them. She was (at least trying to) casually get into the more personal settings the pokedex offered. Amber had been reading up on the various features that these models provided. Less so on the pokemon related ones. She grinned once she found the setting she needed and grabbed Chime's pokeball out of her pocket. "I'm gonna need your help little buddy" Amber muttered as she released her pet. Chime hovered in the air, occasionally swaying back and forth and producing a calm ringing sound. He slowly blinked his eyes, almost as if he were falling back asleep. Amber returned his pokeball to her jacket pocket and used both of her hands to steady her pokedex. Taking quick glances to make sure no one was looking, she quietly nudged Chime over, checked her pokedex, and repeated. Until finally, she had her shot. Chime was barely seen in the corner, and it took a few taps to take the camera's focus off of him. Her hands began to shake ever so slightly again once Professor Gary Oak was clear and in frame. With a small breath, Amber finally took the picture. ClickThe loud noise startled Amber, that she jumped back and nearly fumbled with her pokedex. Chime remained serenely in the air but Amber was clearly panicking. "Oh um, must have used the wrong setting. My...bad" Amber choked as she felt blood rushing to her face. She was glad her complexion hid most of her blush. Chronicler: Drain 1 AP Guile Check: OU9YQnUg2d6 2d6

Church had witnessed the whole scene of his fellow Trainers in complete silence. He was still staring at the Professor, unsure of how to proceed. This was it. This was Gary Freaking Oak. The Trainer, Scientific and Researcher Prodigy. Here he was, in the flesh, a simple human being just like him, who was merrily watching the children try out their Pokédexes as he watched them, perhaps reminiscing earlier days.
"Ummm, sir..." He managed to let out. The professor turned to look at him. An anxious shiver ran down his spine "I...umm...About the..., Professor, sir". His eyesight wandered around the room, unsure of how to ask. This was a huge responsibility. He was not ready for this. He just couldn't shoulder the...
He looked at Professor Oak, who was smiling at him, almost laughing at his visible uneasiness. He was suddenly aware his back muscles were clenched, so he relaxed them. He let out a breath and tried again, with more confidence:
"I'd like to pick my starting Pokémon now, if possible, sir." He entoned, sounding almost serene, but still twiddling his fingers out of sight.
It probably still sounded somewhat strange, but now a new feeling was flooding him. This was it. He'd finally begin his journey. He'd finally meet the being that would shape half of his adventure, with whom he'd carve his path to become the best. This moment could not come sooner!

"That's right, Marshall," Gary Oak said with a nod. "Each time you scan a Pokemon, even if it's a known species, it provides us with more data useful for a number of things. To trainers, the most important data is perhaps the propagation of uncommon moves inherited through inter-species breeding."
He looked over at the Churchill boy a moment, then snapped his fingers. He'd gotten so caught up with the Pokedexes that he'd forgotten the most important part of this whole meeting! "Hm? Oh, of course! Of course!" Gary grinned self-deprecatingly, motioning Church over to a display case with a trio of Pokeballs placed in it. Perhaps he was too distracted to notice Amber covertly taking his picture - or perhaps he was used to his celebrity status by now, and was merely playing it cool.
Above the Pokeballs was a Pokedex entry, displaying the Pokemon contained within and in-depth information to help a young trainer make the decision. "You have the choice of the Fire-Type Charmander, the Grass-Type Bulbasaur, or my personal favorite," he patted the Blastoise's shell cannon, "the Water-Type Squirtle."

Church stared, still awed. He didn't even bother to close his dropping jaw. Not every day one got to see such rare species in the same room. He looked at the display, showing the slowly rotating images of the three species. After pondering for a while, he extended his hand.
"I think I've made my choice" he said, taking the Pokéball and observing it. He pressed the button and released the creature inside. There was a flash of lights, and then there was a small, quadrupedal creature eyeing him with curiosity in front of him. It stretched its body and yawned. He crouched and softly pet the young lizardlike Pokémon's forehead. The creature closed its eyes gladly. Church noticed it had a spotted pattern, with a single, big dark green spot exempt from the rest.
"Mind if I call you Spot? My neighbours used to have a Growlithe named that. It seems to suit you." he said, looking into its red eyes. The creature was silent but seemed content, looking back at him.
Church looked up at professor Oak, smiling. Sparks of excitement ran across his body. This moment was unbelievable.
"It's this one. What do they eat? How should I care for him? He's so much more...real than any Bulbasaur I've ever seen before in pictures! This is... I mean, all of this...Wow!" He could barely contain his excitement. Thank you so much Professor.
Church simmered down, and remembered something.
And also...Um...I had heard maybe...Weren't Pikachu also available for choosing?

Gary stared blankly at Church for several long seconds. Clearly, the prospect of handing out Pikachus was less than amusing. "No," he said dryly, "the League found it encouraged underperforming showboats, and the repetitive electrocution an inexperienced young trainer receives tends to stunt the growth and cause brain damage leading to poor decision-making and emotional retardation."
He warmed up a little bit after that, though, as he continued. "I should tell you to check the Pokedex, but Bulbasaurs are actually quite easy to take care of. They're omnivorous phototrophs, meaning they can - and should - eat a wide variety of foods and need several hours of sunlight each day for optimum health. Like the Squirtle and Charmander, they were selected for their ease of care; just about anything you can eat, the Bulbasaur can eat. They prefer vegetation, but you need to make sure it gets adequate animal protein, and they do well with nitrogen, iron, and phosphorous supplements. If, ah, Spot there starts looking thin, he's not getting enough protein. If his bulb starts turning yellow, the most likely cause is chlorosis - but it might be due to a nutrient deficiency, if the Bulbasaur's been getting enough daylight."

"Hah, good thing my Valeria here feeds off my bio-electricity since she can't really generate her own." Terry says, grabbing a pokedex and taking a picture of the 4 inch spider perched on his head. "Let see here; herbivore but needs to absorb static electricity from others, world's smallest pokemon albeit tied with Flabebe, the lightest Bug type, evolves into Galvantula which is a carnivore and much larger. Good to have it confirmed." He looks around with a massive grin, pocketing the pokedex.
"So I'll just give Val a bit of a groom then we can go find some foreign pokemon to catch!"

"I'm all set to leave as soon as we can. No offense professor. I'm just not the bookish type." Marshall says. He is noticeably fidgeting with his bag, and stealing glances at the door.
